One gap that we’ve identified in these calls has been the haphazard approach developers tend to take toward building human rights tools or services. While there are some guiding principles that seem to be customary (e.g.: as a community we tend to prefer open source and free to commercial tools), tools still have a tendency to be made in something of a vacuum, independent of the broader community of tools (with some notable exceptions, e.g. Tor integration is not uncommon).
One way to address this that has come up in our conversations is to create and establish standards around development of human rights tools.
What would the process to develop those standards look like? What does that work look like? And, is there a better approach to solving this problem than standards?
